Krikorian Offers More Opinions on Immigrants
June 3, 2009 (New York) - Last week, Mark Krikorian of the right-wing Center for Immigration Studies wrote on National Review Online's "The Corner" that people should not “defer” to Judge Sonia Sotomayor by pronouncing her last name the way that she does.
“Putting the emphasis on the final syllable of Sotomayor is unnatural in English… and insisting on an unnatural pronunciation is something we shouldn't be giving in to,” he wrote.
Today on Imanidiot.com, Mr. Krikorian offered further views on immigrants. “Another thing that’s unnatural about immigrants is how different they look from the rest of us," he wrote. "I believe that with skin bleaching, plastic surgery and fat injections, immigrants can be made to look like real Americans—pasty-skinned, thin-lipped and flabby—thereby assimilating into our culture more easily. And perhaps Hispanic and Asian immigrants can be given generic names from their home countries, followed by a sequential number. For example, we could start with Juan 101, Juan 102, and so forth. Some of their real names are just too hard to pronounce.”
Asked to comment on Mr. Krikorian’s opinions, former president George W. Bush said, “Who? Oh, I remember him. I never could pronounce his name, so I nicknamed him Marky Cricketpants.”
